Syndromic surveillance

Washington Poison Center is the only entity within the state that handles poison calls and performs syndromic surveillance on a real-time basis. In collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, poison cases from around the state are assessed in real-time for any outbreaks, perceived threats or unusual activity.

Emergency preparedness

Washington Poison Center clinical staff can quickly mobilize to conduct telephone-based triage during emergency situations. Our staff are FEMA trained and have participated in drills or activation for events such as pandemics or radiological disasters, which allows the affected local health jurisdiction (LHJ) to focus on incident management.
