Clinical Rotations

Resident physicians at the University of Washington and Madigan Army Hospital Emergency Medicine Programs participate in a toxicology rotation at Washington Poison Center. Toxicology is a one-month program. Trainees review poisoning cases and learn how to assess problems relating to the effects of drugs and toxins. Through the program, students are introduced to the field of toxicology and given a greater familiarity with the services of the center.

University of Washington medical students attend lectures, conduct research projects, and spend time at Washington Poison Center learning about all types of poisonings.

University of Washington fellows, preparing for careers in occupational and environmental medicine, spend varying lengths of time at Washington Poison Center. They often use data from the center as a basis for their thesis requirement and some have been subsequently published. It is a win-win situation for the trainees and ourselves.

Paramedic students from Central Washington University spend a day at Washington Poison Center touring the center and listening to calls with a poison specialist. Future paramedics get to see how Washington Poison Center can be an additional resource for the 911 responder in the care and treatment of patients in the field.

Pharmacy students from the University of Washington, Washington State University, Creighton University, and The Ohio State University participate in four-week to six-week rotations at Washington Poison Center. During their rotations, students learn how to manage many of the problems posed to the center, including how to evaluate an exposure and provide accurate responses and treatment plans.
