Pet First Aid Kit
We recommend all families with animals build a first aid kit for their pets. Make sure you include the following items:
- Latex gloves & hand wipes
- Unopened bottle of hydrogen peroxide 3% (to induce vomiting—call Poison Center first)
- Beef or chicken broth (fluids pets will drink)
- Turkey baster or dosing syringe (to give fluids)
- Penlight or flashlight
- Rectal thermometer & lubricating jelly
- A pillowcase (to confine small animals)
- Instant hot & cold packs
- Blunt tipped scissors or razor (to cut hair)
- Nonstick & waterproof adhesive tape
- Sterile gauze pads & bandages
- Splints & tongue depressors
- Stockinette (protect bandage on leg / foot)
- Alcohol swabs
- Antiseptic lotion, powder or spray
- Grease-cutting dish soap (to wash fur and / or wounds)
- Cotton swabs & cotton balls
- Rubber bulb syringe (for eyes, ears & wounds)
- Forceps and /or tweezers
- Styptic liquid (for toenail bleeding)
- Antibiotic ointment (for wounds)
- Hydrocortisone cream (for rashes & itching)
