Contest Tid Bits

Purpose of Contest
To increase the general public’s awareness of poison prevention and the Poison Center through a creative and engaging activity with our youth. To obtain a poster that the Washington Poison Center can use to promote National Poison Prevention Week.

Local Poster Contests
To help encourage learning about poison safety, it is highly suggested that local poster contests be held throughout the state. Send the winning poster of the local contest to the state-level contest. Individual entries to the Washington Poison Center will be accepted.

Lesson Plan
This lesson plan can be utilized in a classroom or youth group setting. The lesson plan concepts (complete with the required Washington State EALRs) are only tools for introduction; the main goal is the creation of the poster.

Free Mr. Yuk Stickers
Thanks to a partnership with Bartell Drugs/KOMO For Kids’ Sake and QFC, we are able to distribute a limited quantity of Mr. Yuk stickers to teachers and instructors of small nonprofits and schools running a local Poster Contest.
To get your free stickers: please be sure to enter “NC” (No Cost) under COST on our materials order form and the number of sticker sheets (10 stickers/sheet) desired. We will let you know if we cannot send the desired quantity.

Order Form
To help enforce the messages of poison safety, it may be useful to send materials home with the students. Download our order form of some of our key materials. To view a complete list of materials and our order form, click here. Remember: if you are with a small nonprofit or school, ask for your free Mr. Yuk stickers (see above).

NOTE: It is highly suggested students participate in a Local Poster Contest (see above) and the winning poster of that contest be sent to the State-level Poster Contest.

Entrants: 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. One entry per person.

Materials: 8.5” x 11” white paper. Any medium is acceptable except pencil, chalk or charcoal, due to smudging. Felt tip markers seem to produce the best results. No computer-generated pictures or cutouts. Hand drawn only.

Theme: “Mr. Yuk Keeps Me Safe!”

Judging: Judging will be based on originality, design, neatness, artwork and overall poison prevention message.

Identification: Print clearly on the back of the poster in pencil: student’s name, age and grade, school/organization and instructor’s name (if applicable). Do not affix anything to the poster.

Deadline: The winning entry must be postmarked to the Washington Poison Center on or before October 31, 2007 and contain the entry/release form, completed feedback form (Local Contest and Invidual Entries are different forms) and be properly identified (see above).
